When you are fortunate enough to live in the vales of Gloucestershire you will understand how important the flora, fauna, wildlife and farming are; We love the land we'e been blessed to farm, we love our herd of cows and here is a little about us:-
The Hobbs family have been farming at Barhouse Farm, in Gloucestershire for almost half a century. in 1970 Jerry’s father Jim moved down from Tetbury with a small herd of Friesians from there the herd was built up. We farm on the Elmore Estate, the Court hosts a beautiful, award-winning wedding venue. Emily pictured with her favourite cow below studied agriculture and produces fresh, Gloucestershire gelato (Italian style ice cream) at the farm. Ollie and Sam studied degrees in agriculture and along with Jerry and Jenni (mum and dad) help to run the farm. we see ourselves as custodians of the land in line with our christian faith and try to do a 'good job' with the resources we've been given.
The Severn vale is, and always has been perfect for grazing, and our cows, which include Brown Swiss, Holstein Friesian, British Friesian, Norwegian Red and Fleckvieh both crosses and pedigree love to graze here. We milk about 180 of these lovely ladies, a big happy family.
We supply a local family dairy – Cotteswold Dairy in Tewkesbury where three generations of the same family have been processing milk, it means a great deal to us to supply locally to a dairy SINCE WE BELIEVE IN LESS FOOD MILES AND REGIONAL PRODUCE.
We farm approx. 350 acres and our cows are out grazing from as early as the weather allows. Last year the cows went out at the end of March and were brought back in November. We believe that our cows are healthier and happier outside – they can express themselves naturally just as nature intended and enjoy fresh grass at its finest. It’s a thrill to watch them as they are brought out in the spring, jumping for joy, storming around the field, playing and kicking – an event the family all look forward to. Our cows mean a lot to us, they deserve the best, after all they do a great job producing our milk.
We sell our milk under the Pasture Promise label in collaboration with Free Range Dairy; we feel this is a great initiative that gives consumers a choice – something which is often overlooked in dairy. The western area of the British Isles is ideally suited to growing grass. The milk is naturally higher in CLA’s and other nutrients from grazing fresh grass and are hugely beneficial to us all and we believe healthier. Omega essential fatty acids are more prevalent in milk from grazing cows and perfect for human nutrition.
in July 2018 we started our LATEST venture - Gloucestershire ice cream under the wholly gelato label. we sell it from our small retail room on farm and also through our 'gelato cart' - our mobile scoop catering pod. EMILY STUDIED THIS STYLE OF ICE REAM BECAUSE IT USES MORE MILK, LESS CREAM AND NO EGG, IT IS CHURNED SLOWER LEAVING IT MORE DENSE THAN ICE CREAM. SHE LOOKED AT RECIPES, INGREDIENT SOURCING, TRIED OUT RECIPES, FLAVOURS. SAVED HER PENNIES AND APPLIED FOR A COTSWOLD LEADER PROGRAMME GRANT WHICH WE SECURED IN JUNE 2018. WE OPENED LATE JULY, JUST 6 WEEKS LATER AND STARTED SELLING IT ON FARM.
Our ethos at Barhouse Farm is happy cows = quality milk
in 2019 we have added a milk vending machine and started the journey towards providing takeaway coffees made from our own milk and home produced milkshakes with the help of a leader grant. the story continues....
